How the Calculator Works
When a shaft transmits torque, the load is distributed across the engaged teeth of the spline or dog. This tool takes your input torque, applies a dynamic shock factor, and converts it into a pure tangential force at the pitch circle. From there, it calculates the three primary failure modes:
Compressive (Bearing) Stress: Checks the surface pressure on the flanks of the teeth. The tool calculates this by dividing the tangential force by the total projected contact area of the mating teeth.
Root Shear Stress: Evaluates the risk of the teeth shearing off the base. Because internal and external splines often have different root thicknesses, the calculator checks both to identify the weakest link in your assembly.
Bending Stress: Models the individual spline tooth as a cantilever beam. It applies the load at the mid-point of the engagement height to evaluate the tooth failure possibility due to bending.
Considerations
In practice, 100% of spline teeth never engage simultaneously due to machining tolerances and index errors.
To provide realistic and safe outputs, this tool follows accepted industry methodologies, such as those outlined in the SAE B92.1 standard. It automatically assumes a conservative load distribution—typically capping the number of load-bearing teeth at 50% for fixed splines. It also allows you to manually input the true radial engagement height, or default to calculating it automatically from your entered major and minor diameters.
